Transforming a Detached Country Home
The Brief
The owners of Little Meadow, a large, detached country house in Dinton, Buckinghamshire, wanted to modernise and improve how the space worked for family life while retaining its character, so a full refurbishment was the ideal approach. A refurbishment is about updating and enhancing an existing home, rather than starting again, to bring it up to modern standards while preserving what makes it special.
The project involved significant internal changes, upgrades and finishes to create a more contemporary, practical layout, clearly illustrating what a refurbishment looks like in a lived-in family home.
The client's vision also included larger glazing openings to enhance natural light, a modern open-plan kitchen diner for seamless entertaining, and a complete garden makeover.
In addition, they desired underfloor heating installed throughout the ground floor for a touch of luxurious comfort. High-end kitchen and bathroom remodelling were also central to their desired transformation.
The Solution
Fresh Approach Design & Build developed a comprehensive plan to realise the homeowners' vision.
By reconfiguring rooms, improving insulation and services, and refreshing every finish, the property was carefully transformed without losing its original charm, demonstrating that a refurbishment can be both thorough and sensitive to the building’s character.
To maximise natural light and create a more open feel, the team strategically incorporated new low-profile aluminium sliding doors and windows with minimal frames. These modern elements seamlessly integrated with the existing architecture, maintaining the property's character.
Understanding the importance of complementing the home's exterior, our landscape designer transformed the garden. The design preserved the essence of a large country house, incorporating features like a walled garden, new pathways, and hard standing areas.
For the interior, Fresh Approach partnered with trusted suppliers to create expertly designed kitchen and bathroom spaces. High-end finishes and meticulous craftsmanship ensured a luxurious and functional outcome.
The Outcome
Little Meadow underwent a remarkable whole‑house and energy upgrade, including a full re‑roof from clay to slate tiles, new solar panels linked to Tesla battery storage, and comprehensive internal and external refurbishment.
Updated interior works
Fresh Approach created a new ensuite bedroom, a modern downstairs shower room, and a beautifully designed kitchen and utility room space, all tailored to contemporary family living. The ground floor was completely renovated, featuring new flooring and carpets throughout, supported by new electrical, plumbing, and heating systems to provide a robust and modern infrastructure.
Light and airy throughout, the interior was redecorated in neutral colours to further enhance the feeling of spaciousness. These upgrades sit alongside an improved energy specification, with the new roof build‑up, solar array and Tesla battery storage working together to deliver long‑term running cost and comfort benefits.
Roof, energy and exterior
As part of the envelope upgrade, the property was re‑roofed, replacing the original clay tiles with elegant slate tiles to complement the country setting and provide a crisp, durable finish. Integrated solar panels were installed and connected to Tesla battery storage, allowing the home to capture and store renewable energy for use throughout the day and evening.
Externally, the rendering was redone and repainted, and all first‑floor and ground‑floor windows were carefully prepared and repainted to unify the façade and refresh the overall appearance. These coordinated works significantly uplifted kerb appeal while also improving the performance and longevity of the building envelope.
Gardens and outdoor living
The exterior transformation is equally impressive, with a full turnkey garden landscaping project, complete with retaining walls, walled planting, and new pathways that connect the house and garden more effectively. A base was also prepared for a bespoke timber potting shed, adding a touch of personalised charm and creating a practical, characterful corner to the garden.

"Chris and the team were outstanding from start to finish as we did a full refurb on our "new" house. We agreed a May 2023 start date in Feb 2023, with a 14 week project span for new kitchen, UFH, bathrooms, glazing (including 5 sliding units up to 4500mm wide), re-plumb and a long list of external cosmetic changes, together with painting, decoration and flooring (Amtico, wood and carpet). Chris started on the day he originally said and finished in 15 weeks even after we added a complete garden remodel into the mix as well. He also brought it in on budget (apart from our additions, all of which he bought in for the quoted sums). I've never come across a building firm that delivered so accurately to time & cost.
At the same time Chris and the tradesmen all work on the basis that the customer deserves a top-notch result, so their quality of work and pre-snagging left almost nothing for me to snag, and I consider myself quite picky. I even had to stop Chris digging up a large cast concrete greenhouse base off his own bat and at his own cost because of a quite trivial crack when I was happy with a small local repair (it's a greenhouse base after all !)
Fresh Approach aren't the cheapest building firm in the area, but in terms of what they deliver (speed, quality, predictability) and what they eliminate (stress, arguments, post-purchase remorse) they are worth absolutely every penny. If you buy cheap, you generally pay twice and get ulcers in the process, so Chris and the team are exceptionally cost-effective in the round and I couldn't recommend them more highly.
